Welcome to Ydrefors Camping

…a Pearl just on the border between the deep forests of Småland and the rural areas of Östergötland.

The camping is owned and operated by Ydrefors Community Club (Ydrefors Samhällsförening) a member of National Federation of Rural Community Centres in Sweden.

 YDREFORS

Ydrefors is a small village with about 50 inhabitants located just on the border between the provinces Småland and Östergötland. One hundred years ago it was a busy place with two sawmills, several shops, schools and a railway station. Today nothing of that is left and most people goes to nearby towns or municipalities to work.

Ydrefors is surrounded by large forest areas and there are only a few farms left. Earlier there were hundreds of small cottages spread all over the area but today only some, partly destroyed, stone fences remains. One exception is a small cottage, Söderhult, only 3 km from Ydrefors. Here you can enjoy a variety of different kinds of trees such as ash, oak, hazel etc.

There are some traces of iron production found in the area probably from the time when Christ was born.

Through the middle of Ydrefors flows a small river, Stångån. Just before passing the village it widens to a small lake, Brosjön, providing perfect swimming facilities for the camping site.

The nature around Ydrefors is rather shifting from dark woods to open areas providing tremendous views over the landscape. If you move carefully in the woods you may spot some of the small trolls before they quickly hides behind the numerous giant blocks of stone. However there is a much greater chance to encounter a big elk especially if you travel on one of the numerous gravel roads in the woods. The chances are best at dawn or just before sunset.

There are several interesting and famous places to visit in the vicinity of Ydrefors:

The Astrid Lindgren´s World in Vimmerby is only 30 km. away. The canoe route in

Stångån starts very close to Ydrefors. This route gives an exiting experience with a very close contact with the varying nature.

There are also some trekking routes passing a few km. away from the village.

If you travel 7 km. on the road towards Vimmerby you will find The National Park of Norra Kvill. About the same distance towards Svinhult there is a Natural Reserv  “Korphålorna” (Homes of Ravens).

Close to Ydrefors there is also the old hand paper mill in Ösjöfors. This plant was established year 1777  and was still in use until 1926. It is now open in summertime with guided tours showing how paper was originally produced.

A complete listing of all interesting places and exhibitions in the area can be borrowed in the Café.
